Abstract

Methane deposits in coal beds are related to unconventional deposits of natural gas. The purpose of the work is to generalize data on the gas presence in the gas-coal fields of the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin; to ascertain alterations of methane presence of the coal-bearing series across the area of the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin.

We have analyzed gas-coal deposits of the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin. General view of the change in methane presence across the area of the basin is the following:

– of the Volyn field seams of the Bashkirian stage have the least methane presence. Thus, for the seam b3 it doesn’t exceed 0.1–1. cu m/t. dry ash-free mass (cu m/t. a.-f. m.), and for the seam b1, it is equal to 0.2–3.0 cu m/t. a.-f. m.). The methane presence the Serpukhovian stage is higher and is changed within on a large scale from 0.01 to 3.0 cu m/t. a.-f. m. In the northern part of the basin, at the Volyn field the commercial coal seams have insignificant methane presence from 0.01 to 1.4 cu m/t. a.-f. m. Only is the far north-west it is increased up to 4–8 cu m/t. a.-f. m.;

– in the northern and north-eastern parts of the Zabuzhzhia field, the methane presence of coalbeds of the Serpukhovian stage is from 0.01 to 1. cu m/t. a.-f. m. With the increase in the depth of occurrence up to 500–650 m in the south-western part of the field, the methane presence increases to 2–10 cu m/t. a.-f. m. and at some plots it reaches 12–17 cu m/t. a.-f. m.;

– іn the Mezhyrichchia field the methane presence of the seams n11, n12, as well as of the main working seams of north-eastern part and along their outcrops into Carboniferous hardly reaches 3–5 cu m/t. a.-f. m. Characteristic of the field is that with increase of the depth of occurrence of beds from 380 to 450 m in the east and to 500–570 m in the west, the methane presence increases from 3–8 to 5–17 cu m/t. a.-f. m.;

– in the Tyagliv field, the methane presence of coalbeds reaches of its maximum and in the depth of 800–870 m it is from 8 to 31 cu m/t. a.-f. m. Тhe Tyagliv field is the most gas-bearing in the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin;

– in the Lyubelya field, in its southern part, coal-bearing bearing series up to coal seam n7 is degassed, and the methane content in the gas mixture is from 0 to 0.8 cu m/t. a.-f. m. In the northern direction of the field the methane presence increases to 5–15 cu m/t. a.-f. m., and in the seam v6 up to 20 cu m/t. a.-f. m. at the mine fields No. 4 and No. 5.

To ascertain prospects of the areas for commercial extraction of coalbed methane it is necessary to take all geological factors, influencing the spreading and distribution of coal gases, into consideration. Complex approach to coal production with studying gas bearingness in the gas-bearing series is very important for the perspectiveness of the areas. The usage of such methods is one of the perspective directions of a stable development of coal-producing regions with gradual transfer from the monocentrified production to the multiprofile purposefulness.

Abstract

On the basis of morphological analysis and detailed studies of lithological-facies composition and formation conditions of coal-bearing deposits the investigations of the lower part of Carboniferous deposits of the Lviv-Volyn Basin of south-western edge of the East European Platform were conducted. In particular, the available geological material was analyzed; the initial conditions of Carbonic coal-forming (Late Tournai – beginning of Late Visean) were studied and positions of the lower boundary of the coal-bearing formation were grounded; the availability of commercial coal-bearing potential (thickness of coal seams 0.6 m and more) of the lower part of Carbonic was studied; commercial coal-bearing potential of the Visean and the lower part of the Serpukhovian stages of the lower subformation of the basin was detected; the influence of intraformational and epigenetic washings and other factors that caused the formation and changes of the lower part of the coal-bearing formation, the morphology were investigated; the possibilities of commercial development of coal seams of the lower horizons were grounded.

The most promising areas for searching commercial coal seams and the plots with workable thickness in deposits of the lower coal-bearing subformation were singled out for the extension of commercial coal-bearing potential and determination of the directions of searching and prospecting for promising coal deposits of the basin. It was noted that within the bounds of such areas (the Kovel area, the Bubnivska area, the Busk field and other) a continental regime was formed for a long time, and in the conditions of the marshy near-sea lowgrounds with a developed river system and dismembered paleorelief the periodical peat accumulation occurred that caused the formation of commercial coal seams.

Reliable prediction of the mining-geological conditions for the development and the assessment of the commercial usability of the coal seams of the lower part of Carbonic deposits in the whole territory of the basin and within the limits of acting mines should ensure the stable development of the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin.

Abstract

After sufficient study, generalizations of all the data available as to stratigraphy, tectonics, lithological composition of coal-bearing series of the basin from the point of view of its potential for gas presence was possible. The composition, nature of coal gases, forms of occurrence and the mode of their burial have been considered. Problems of generation of hydrocarbon gases in the process of coalification of organic substance and their abiogenic origin connected with subsurface processes of the Earth have been studied. The influence of reservoir properties of coal and coal-enclosing rocks, the composition and physical-mechanical features of the immediate roof and the foot of coal seams have been analysed, the dependence of the gas distribution in coal seams and coal-enclosing rocks upon disjunctive tectonic dislocations has been ascertained. The influence of intraformational and epigene washouts upon degassing of coal seams has been investigated. On the basis of construction of schemes of the gas presence in coal seams of some mine fields and on the whole basin the conclusions have been made about the methane distribution in coal-bearing series.
Materials on the assessment of methane resources of the gas-coal fields have been accumulated and systematized as well as the prospects of the modern natural gas presence in coal seams of the deep levels of the basin have been outlined. Optimum conditions of the formation of hydrocarbon gases accumulations have been cited. The conclusions have been made as to the modern extractive potential of gases of coal-bearing series of the Lviv-Volyn Basin as possible source of the improvement of the up-to-date state of the fuel-power complex of the Ukraine.
