Abstract

On the basis of morphological analysis and detailed studies of lithological-facies composition and formation conditions of coal-bearing deposits the investigations of the lower part of Carboniferous deposits of the Lviv-Volyn Basin of south-western edge of the East European Platform were conducted. In particular, the available geological material was analyzed; the initial conditions of Carbonic coal-forming (Late Tournai – beginning of Late Visean) were studied and positions of the lower boundary of the coal-bearing formation were grounded; the availability of commercial coal-bearing potential (thickness of coal seams 0.6 m and more) of the lower part of Carbonic was studied; commercial coal-bearing potential of the Visean and the lower part of the Serpukhovian stages of the lower subformation of the basin was detected; the influence of intraformational and epigenetic washings and other factors that caused the formation and changes of the lower part of the coal-bearing formation, the morphology were investigated; the possibilities of commercial development of coal seams of the lower horizons were grounded.

The most promising areas for searching commercial coal seams and the plots with workable thickness in deposits of the lower coal-bearing subformation were singled out for the extension of commercial coal-bearing potential and determination of the directions of searching and prospecting for promising coal deposits of the basin. It was noted that within the bounds of such areas (the Kovel area, the Bubnivska area, the Busk field and other) a continental regime was formed for a long time, and in the conditions of the marshy near-sea lowgrounds with a developed river system and dismembered paleorelief the periodical peat accumulation occurred that caused the formation of commercial coal seams.

Reliable prediction of the mining-geological conditions for the development and the assessment of the commercial usability of the coal seams of the lower part of Carbonic deposits in the whole territory of the basin and within the limits of acting mines should ensure the stable development of the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin.

Abstract

Sudden coal and gas outbursts in coal mines are one of the most harmful and at the same time, dangerous gas-dynamic phenomena faced when coal producting. The sudden coal and gas outbursts is the evanescent destruction of the bottom-hole area in the coal bed, which develops from the bottom into the depth of a massif, and the crushed coal with gas is thrown to a long distance from the bottom into the mine, destroying everything in its way, creating the conditions for explosion and fire breaking-out. Sudden outbursts lead to significant material losses for the recovery from an accident and in some cases injuries and human losses. The problem of reliable prediction, prevention, and control of sudden coal and gas outbursts at coal mines remains extremely urgent, due to the constant increase in the depth of mining operations. The analysis of the experience of predicting and preventing the outburst hazard in coal beds of Donets and Lviv-Volyn coal basins is analyzed. At Donbas mines since 1906, there have been more than 7.5 thousand sudden outbursts. Although mining had now reached considerable depths (from 300 to 600 m), the emergence of coal and gas outbursts have not been recorded. The purpose of the research is to determine the depth of the possible emergence of sudden coal and gas outbursts in the LVB, with regard to the peculiarities of the geological structure of the coal-bearing strata in the Lviv-Volyn coal basin.

The comparative possible depth estimation in the manifestation of the outburst hazard of the coal beds in the LVB is given. It is calculated according to the normative technique and performed according to the formulas obtained by the statistical analysis for the actual position of the minimum depth of coal and gas outbursts at the Donbas mines. The absence of sudden coal and gas outbursts at LVB mines on the coal beds, which are hazardous according to the prediction data, is performed according to the methods regulated by the normative documents and compiled by the experience of studying the outbursts in Donbas, is explained by the differences in the geological structure of the LVB, the main of which is the presence of thick mass of covering deposits and a significantly greater depth of the methane gas zone. The application of the empirical formulas prediction, which includes the methane gas zone depth index, allows us to account for these differences and it is much more reliable to determine the possible depths of sudden outbursts for LVB, which, all other things being equal, should be greater than in the Donbas. In particular, according to the performed calculations, the outburst hazard situation at the “Stepova” mine is predicted at depths of more than 700 m. As prediction indices for the calculations, values of methane gas zone depths of 450 m were adopted, and the minimum value of volatile-matter yield was 33.3%.

This approach can be proposed for predicting the coal and gas outbursts hazard in other Lviv-Volyn basin mines. To determine the predicted depth of the possible emergence of sudden coal and gas outbursts, it is advisable to take into account the depth of the methane gas zone in the prediction calculations.

Abstract

After sufficient study, generalizations of all the data available as to stratigraphy, tectonics, lithological composition of coal-bearing series of the basin from the point of view of its potential for gas presence was possible. The composition, nature of coal gases, forms of occurrence and the mode of their burial have been considered. Problems of generation of hydrocarbon gases in the process of coalification of organic substance and their abiogenic origin connected with subsurface processes of the Earth have been studied. The influence of reservoir properties of coal and coal-enclosing rocks, the composition and physical-mechanical features of the immediate roof and the foot of coal seams have been analysed, the dependence of the gas distribution in coal seams and coal-enclosing rocks upon disjunctive tectonic dislocations has been ascertained. The influence of intraformational and epigene washouts upon degassing of coal seams has been investigated. On the basis of construction of schemes of the gas presence in coal seams of some mine fields and on the whole basin the conclusions have been made about the methane distribution in coal-bearing series.
Materials on the assessment of methane resources of the gas-coal fields have been accumulated and systematized as well as the prospects of the modern natural gas presence in coal seams of the deep levels of the basin have been outlined. Optimum conditions of the formation of hydrocarbon gases accumulations have been cited. The conclusions have been made as to the modern extractive potential of gases of coal-bearing series of the Lviv-Volyn Basin as possible source of the improvement of the up-to-date state of the fuel-power complex of the Ukraine.
